I know Latin America

This past Friday and Saturday were Region X Academic Decathlon competition days.

Now, if you are unfamiliar with Academic Decathlon, here’s a brief explanation: there is a theme each year that decathletes study the fuck out of (in the case of this year: Latin America).  There are nine people on a team, three categories: Honor (A students), Scholastic (B students), and Varsity (C students).  On the first day, we take tests, give a prepared speech, an impromptu speech, have an interview, and write an essay.  Testing was long and tedious: seven tests (math, music, economics, social studies, language and literature, art, and super quiz which is evolutionary biology this year), 30 minutes each.  After that there is a relay over the super quiz material.

In any case, our team won 1st place, thanks primarily goes to the A’s, but indeed we all contributed something.  State is at the end of this month, so three weeks to improve.  If we win state, nationals is at the end of April.

So, while the testing and the being in a suit and uncomfortable clothing was not fun, the winning was fun.
